What Profgrad is all about Part2

What Profgrad is all about Part2

It’s week 2 of Profgrad’s insight to www.profgrad.co.za Last week the site aimed at how to get into university. See previous post on the blog to view article. This week Profgrad would like to focus on the various opportunities available to students at South African Universities. There are many different fields a student could look to study in. Profgrad has done extensive research, not only to compile information of all the South African Universities but also to give a brief description on duration of undergraduate degree, location and jobs applicable to that line of study. It is important for students in South Africa to know the information set out in this website before they begin their journey as students and study towards a certain career. Profgrad has a significant amount of information available to these students in order for them to plan their future. This website will be able to answer a lot of the questions you might have.

There are always students who do not know which degree they would like to study. If you are unsure of the degree you would like to study but have an idea of which industry field you would like to enter, then the opportunities page on Profgrad is relevant to you. Profgrad has compiled all the relevant degree’s in an industry and listed it for convenience. Example; if you would like to study in the financial industry, but you are unsure which degrees are available, you could click on Commerce degrees and a list of various options could be chosen. This will allow you to make an informed decision with the degrees available to you.

There are many factors which are taken into account when choosing a specific degree. Duration, Jobs applicable, APS Score {this is extremely important as you need to know if you qualify for the specific degree} and Location are critical when choosing a degree. If the degree is only available at the University of Cape Town and you live in Durban, you would need to look at additional funds as you would need to move and live in Cape Town.  You also need to understand the duration of the degree. It is important as you need to know what you are in for. You need to commit to the entire degree. If the degree’s duration is 6 years and after 3 years you are tired of studying, you will drop out of university, will be many thousands of Rand’s worse off without anything to show for it.
Once you have acquired your degree through dedication, commitment and perseverance, you can start looking for a job. Everybody is different and therefore Profgrad has taken time to research and identify the most related jobs for a specific degree. You can find that people who have studied the same degree might have completely different jobs. The world is full of opportunities and this is what makes choosing a degree extremely important. A good example of different jobs related to a specific degree would be a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. This is a degree which allows you to enter many different lines of work once completed. Your occupation could range from being a food chemist to a drug analyst. The important thing to remember is to study what you passionate about.

Are you studying what you are Passionate about?

What Profgrad is all about!

What Profgrad is all about!

Profgrad would like to take the next few weeks to discuss what the website is all about. It is important for students in South Africa to know the information set out in this website before they begin their journey as students and study towards a certain career. Profgrad has a significant amount of information available to these students in order for them to plan their future. This website will be able to answer a lot of the questions you might have. This week we will discuss how to get into University.

This question might sound simple but there are a lot of things to take into account. Firstly the website will be able to assist you in your APS calculation. By entering the subjects and symbols that you have achieved, the system will be able to automatically calculate what your APS is. Using this information you will be able to see whether you qualify to study a certain degree. To calculate your APS Score, use the link below.

If you are unsure on what you would like to study, it is important to do a career aptitude test. The test will take a person’s interests, personality, skills and aptitude into account and will give an outcome of which career path the individual should be looking at. The website will provide you with links you can go to in order to do a quick and free career aptitude test. To see examples of the questions in a career aptitude test please use the link below.

There are a lot of terms that are used at University that are not part of the normal terms used in everyday life. The website will be able to provide you with frequently used terms as well as the relevant definitions. At school you are used to calling the educator a teacher. This is not the correct term to use at university and many students will laugh at you for using just that. The correct term to use will be dean, lecturer or professor. For more terms used at University use the link below.

Getting a degree can be very expensive and not all students have the means to fund this out of their pockets. Profgrad has discussed the different ways of funding further education on the website. On the website you will be able to get knowledge on the different options available. These examples range from student loans, bursaries, part time studies, University Financial Aid and National Financial Aid. These are all options worth taking a look at. To see an explanation on each use the link below.

Student Dating

Student Dating

Students are young, attractive and energetic individuals looking for romance. As a student, you have many opportunities to meet somebody special. You have one thing in common with all other students and that is time. Not only time to meet somebody as you are young, but time in general as your daily routine might not be that time intensive. So what is the answer to finding somebody special? How do you go about dating? Where do you go and what do you say on your date? Profgrad would like to explore these conundrums?

How do you go about dating? Is it easy to ask somebody out? The answer to this is probably no for most people. So how is it that these people could find somebody special? Social Networks have made it much easier these days to get to know somebody long before you have even met this person. You could find out pretty much everything there is to know about somebody long before your meeting. Students are well known for their ability to communicate on these platforms. When the time comes to meet the person you have been chatting to, not only have you screened that person but you can work out any lies or truths that have been told over that medium. If somebody mentions that they have a blue car, and then arrive in a white car, it will be a good opportunity to work out any other false information relayed to you in the build-up to your date. Below is a top 10 list of dating platforms. Should Profgrad launch its own dating service designed for students?

Being alone with somebody else on a first date is difficult if you have never met before. If a friend or family member has set the date up for you, not only can it be intimidating but could also bring forth many challenges. As a student, it could be even more difficult as you have an added thing to worry about…money. You ideally do not want the first date to be at McDonalds or KFC. You could easily give the wrong impression of being cheap, when in fact as a student you are being economically efficient. Finding the right idea for a date is difficult. You might have a certain budget that you need to stick to or even have transport issues. Profgrad has searched the internet to find an article which describes various activities you could do.

Being in an existing relationship at university could also be very difficult. There are many obstacles which could hinder your success rate at dating. For instance, as a student, you are invited to many social gatherings. You are not only exposed to these environments but encouraged to participate in them by your peers. Usually there will be liquor involved and many students which have the same intention as you. Your partner is at home studying for their Economics exam the next day and you meet somebody else. You are a little tipsy from all the Katemba {see previous Profgrad blog posts} you have consumed, young, foolish {all justifications by yourself to do something you shouldn’t} and something happens that should really not have happened. In fact, this sequence of events would never have occurred had you been sober, old and wise. Unfortunately once the scenario takes place, there is no going back. It’s happened and you have to take responsibility for your actions.  Has something happened while your partner was studying for their exam?

Would you like Profgrad to start its own Dating service exclusive to students? If you not studying, you not loving!!

What students can do during the holidays!

What students can do during the holidays!

Holidays have begun!! Students might have no idea what to do during the holidays or how to keep busy. Being away from all your friends at university might not be easy.  Students spend lots of time together and the relationships you have made with other students might be on hold for a few weeks because of long distances. There are many things to do during the holidays that can be either productive or just plain fun. Profgrad would like to discuss all the different things you can do during the holidays.

Exams can be emotionally and physically draining to students. As a student, you might have spent many nights studying and did not get the necessary sleep needed. As the holidays start, this will be a good time to catch up on any lost sleep. We are not saying spend every second of every day in bed…. Take the time to relax, maybe rent a few movies and stay in bed the first few days to recover. Here is a list of all the new releases out.

If you apply for a holiday job, not only will you keep busy and earn some extra cash, you will also be able to show this on your CV. Employers will be able to see that you have some experience and did not waste any opportunities whilst studying at university. This might show that you are dedicated and eager to learn. You will get the feel of what it is like to work as a lot of students get a big shock after university when they have to enter the world of a working person. This working experience is not always perceived as initially expected. Below is an article explaining how to go about getting a holiday job.

Go on holiday for a week or so. Students might think that they do not have money to go on holidays etc. Some companies give student discounts and this could be much cheaper than expected. You might want to go on holiday with a few friends or go on holiday with family. At the end of the day you want to make this a memorable holiday and walk away with some much needed quality time with either friends or family. See a few deals that might look appealing on the below link.

Get ahead of the curve. If you like reading and already have your textbooks for the next semester, start reading through it. Nothing will get you better prepared for the new semester than knowing what you are going to be learning in the next semester. You will know by the time you get to class what your lecturer is explaining. You can therefore ask the right questions when in class. You will not have unanswered questions, when preparing for the next exam. As the lecturer goes through the work, this will be the second time you go through it, making preparing for the next exam so much easier.

Some universities might offer extra classes. If you had trouble with a certain module or feel the need to learn an extra one, for example an extra language that might not be offered with your course, during the normal semester and it might clash with your scheduling, now is the time to do that. It is never a bad idea to get extra credits.  Visit your university website to see if they offer any extra classes during holidays. http://www.profgrad.co.za/institution.html

What are you planning for the holidays?
